Piergiorgio Colonna began learning to play the drums at the age of 10, first in public schools and then as a self-taught musician. At the age of 17, he began his advanced studies at the E.R. Duni Conservatory in Matera, under the guidance of teachers such as Bruno Astesana, Fabio Accardi, Gianluigi Giannatempo, Pierluigi Balducci, Mario Rosini and others.
Here he obtained two diplomas: "Diploma di primo livello in batterie e percussioni jazz" (Bachelor in drums and jazz percussion - interpretation), with the vote of 110/110 and "Diploma di secondo livello in batterie e percussioni jazz" (master in drums and jazz percussion - interpretation), with the vote of 104/110.
During his studies, he began his professional career as a drummer, working on a number of projects in a variety of musical styles. He specialised in jazz, establishing himself on the local scene, mainly with the group "Kind of Rhythm", a project that won third place in the "Onyx Jazz Contest" in 2019, and played at the "Gezziamoci Festival" the same year, opening the concert of the "Flatiron Trio", directed by the famous pianist Roberto Cipelli. He began teaching drums at the same time as working as a musician, both privately and at the "Accademia Musicale Gravinese" music school.
In this role, he worked with children, adults and people of all ages with physical disabilities and/or learning difficulties, and furthered his studies through private lessons, masterclasses and workshops with Pasquale Fiore, Dario Panza, Chris Dave, Chris Coleman, Dave Elitch, Federico Paulovich, Dado Moroni and other internationally renowned drummers and musicians.
In 2021, during his final year of his Master's degree, Piergiorgio will begin his studies at the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne, initially as an Erasmus student and then as a student in the Master of Music Pedagogy - Jazz Drums programme, after completing his studies at the Conservatoire E.R. Duni. He obtained his master's degree in teaching in 2024.
At the same time, he continues his professional activity in Lausanne, which enables him to continue enriching and deepening his pedagogical and artistic skills, as well as perfecting his skills as a musician and educator.
